Beach Trash

All this nice weather lately means I've had tons of time to gather, organize, photograph (and then throw away) beach trash. Even if I don't pick up much I do feel like I'm at least helping my fellow beach go-ers out a little bit. I hope others will help pick up trash on the beach as well, ours doesn't look like much of a paradise at the moment. You can't walk a step without finding a plastic bottle cap, or tampon applicator (I still don't understand why there are SO many at the beach) It's disgusting how much trash is actually on the beach right now. I took some outfit pictures there a few days ago and opted out of using a few of my favorites because of the amount of trash you could see in the photos, it was embarrassing! Oh hey, just taking outfit pictures at the local dump, don't mind me.

Here are some photos from my most recent beach combing expedition.
Is it really weird that I have favorite things to find when I'm gathering trash for these pictures? Because I totally do! Hair barrettes, figurines of little people (like plastic army men!) and things shaped like letters or numbers (like refrigerator magnets) are among the few things that I will normally spot from a distance and dash to grab.

Here two behind the scenes photos...
This basket I picked up at the thrift store was probably one of my best purchases ever. I use it for mushrooms, rocks, beach trash - everything! Plus it's super cute and makes it just look like I'm going on a picnic instead of picking up and carrying around all kinds of strange items.
You can find other beach trash posts here and here.
Hope you're having a great day! If it's a nice day where you are, you live close to the beach and have nothing to do today - why not take a trip there and help clean up the place so everyone can enjoy it just a little bit more.

FF #150

Look at these gorgeous dresses from Kling! I think the first one is my favorite, but it's tough to pick because those big pink polka dots are just too cute!

Positively melting over these shoes from Tonic! The colors are perfect plus I love a good pair of cut out shoes!

Eeep! I wish I was more confident about ordering shorts online! (I am so so so picky about how shorts fit) These are so snazzy.

I am smitten with these embroidered old photos by Jose Romussi. So beautiful!

Love these old watch makers vials. I want a few to fill with teeth, feathers, and other little things to put on my curiosity shelf.  I'm hoping to find some out one day at a flea market, or something where I can relate a memory to where I got them. That way they'd be a little bit more special.

One of my favorite things to do is watch my favorite movies on TV where they edit out all the "bad words". The Big Lebowski is particularly hilarious at the part when Walter smashes what he thinks is Larry's car and they change the offensive language to 'Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?!" (You can watch a clip of it here, as well a bunch of other funny ones. They are NSFW, of course) I saw this one on  Eartha Kitsch's blog from Snakes on a Plane and just about had rootbeer come from my nose. I watched it about ten times and then another ten times with Kevin when he got home.
(Monkey Fighten' needs to be a regular saying for me now. It's too funny not to use everyday!)
Oh my gosh, what a precious kitty! I love catching animals making dumb faces in pictures but this kitty seriously takes the cake.
I love these two handmade polishes from KBShimmer! Chunky glitter polishes are my favorite when it comes to just painting my nails one solid color. The white one kind of reminds me of cake batter with sprinkles mixed in, yum!

Mirror bunting?! So awesome. I wish I had a place to put this.

Hope you have a fabulous Friday! I'm going to finish up organizing Aprils ads (it's not too late if you'd like one, just email me!) and then step away from the computer. It's been headaches galore over here lately so a day away from the computer will probably do a world of difference for me.

What I wore: on the beach

the details
shirt - c/o Romwe
skirt - thrifted / vintage
tights - Amazon
socks - Forever 21
shoes - c/o Wanted Shoes

This is one of my favorite skirts. I actually kind of hate wearing it because I'm afraid of ruining it. I feel that way about a good portion of my clothes though. I've always been the kind of person who likes to get dirty when I go outside. If there's a puddle, I'd love to splash in it. Mud? I want to squish my toes in it. A tree down? Of course I want to climb all over it. As a child I had distinct "play clothes" and "school clothes" and now as an adult, I'm trying to break that habit (I mean, I don't go to school anymore obviously, so I guess they'd now be "estate sale clothes" Haha) or at least make the line a little blurrier. Just because I'm going to take a walk on the beach or in the woods doesn't mean I need to wear my play clothes. I can go outside, not get completely dirty - and if I do my clothes can be washed! It's so not as big a deal as I make it in my head.

We've been spending so much time at the beach lately, I love it. Even if I do really love the beach in the winter it's so nice to go there and not freeze my butt off. We spent this particular evening picking up rocks. Right now our beach is mostly rocks, almost all of the sand has disappeared. While that would really suck if I had plans of playing in the sand, I really just prefer being on the beach looking for treasures and enjoying the sights and sounds. Plus there are so many cool rocks! Not to sound like a total weirdo but I could seriously spend all day on the beach just looking for cool rocks and photographing them. They come in so many colors and patterns, it's just amazing.

Hope you have a fabulous Thursday!

indiana, 1939

My grandparents, Edna and Dan, were married in 1938.  In 1939 they traveled from St. Louis to Indiana to visit Edna's family there.  I love the photos from this trip--I'm guessing Edna took most of them--as they have such a dreamy, summery feeling.

Also, these gals wore some really cute dresses!

I really love this photo.

Edna on horseback.

Another photo I particularly love--Dan and one of Edna's relatives.

These folks appear to be standing in front of some kind of mobile grocery store.  Nifty!

Dan on the right, rocking the boater.

That's Edna's mother, my great-grandmother Mary Francis, on the far left.  I love this photo for the dresses, naturally, but also for the luncheonette menu behind them!
